Palio and contrade

Project 5 of 11

In order to get an impression of what the Palio of Siena is, one should be in town on July 2nd or August 16h , follow the ceremonies, see people singing while accompanying the horses, watching them exulting or crying at the end of the race. Nevertheless, if you cannot be there in those days then a guide can help you find out what a “contrada” is, how many horses run the Palio, the importance of superstition and religion, to understand the meaning of the parade in traditional costumes that unwinds itself through the town and ends up in the Campo. Palio means a collective ritual, made of many precise events and moments and rites that only Sienese people can really “feel”….but about which you can learn a lot following this tour!
